I am having a similar issue - I need to provide images in dpi. If I understood the advice in this thread, I should go to "Resolution" and adjust it to I have never seen 'dots' as a measurement before, I'm not sure how well it correlates with pixels. Therefore, my question is whether adjusting PPI to will be the same as dpi? Same Problem. Same problem.

I have a number of photo's that I sent to my publisher for inclusion in a forthcoming book. They range from 72 to DPI. Their photo people say they need DPI. When I go to to "preview" and change to the image becomes extremely large. How would I handle this and send them images sized at DPI? Each "dot" or pixel becomes four. So on your screen, if you hold the same zoom level, the image will now be four times as large, in area, as it was originally.

  6. In any event, you are going to have an adventure with what you need to do unless you have the original pictures in a higher resolution. The challenge with going from lower DPI to higher DPI is that you cannot add information to a picture that isn't there. Consider this: It will end up expanding each dot to four dots. But the new "dots" now are larger, so you get what is called "pixelation. So if your publisher needs DPI images and you send them , or stretched to , the printed images could be pixelated and show "jaggies" or rough edges, in the printed picture.

The DPI setting determines how many dots the printer drops onto every square inch of the image. You need to understand how DPI works because it controls the two most important things in printing:.

Below are two lines that consist of the same 40 squares—the same size and same color. The squares are less tightly packed on the top line, equating to a lower DPI; and more tightly packed on the bottom line for a higher DPI. The effect is clear. On the Lower DPI line the gradient is a lot less smooth.

You can see clear edges against each of the squares. The line is also a lot longer. On the Higher DPI line the gradient is much smoother. The line is also a lot shorter. This demonstrates the balancing act you often need to make when setting the print resolution: Where possible, you should always save your work in as a high a resolution as you can. In no time, you'll have the perfect image for sharing, uploading, or printing.

The standard rule is that you should aim for dpi. The intended viewing distance of the print plays a large role in what resolution you need. And so on. The further away you intend to look at your image, the lower you can set the resolution. A billboard poster designed to be seen from across the street might be printed at as low as 20 dots per inch.

Remember that DPI is only a measurement of print resolution. Changing the DPI does not change the size of your digital image, or the size of the file. Uncheck Resample Image , because this setting will upscale your image, which will make it lower quality. Notice how the Width and Height figures change, too. This shows you the size your image will print. You can, of course, specify the width and height instead, in inches or centimeters. The Y Resolution should update automatically, too.

Like in Photoshop, you can set the physical width and height instead. All you have to do is input the DPI you need the image changed to, drag-and-drop the file to upload it, and wait.
